Hotel upgrades can often seem rigged. You need to be an elite member or really lucky, right?
Yes, being an elite member is great; but that isn’t your only in. So what can a random traveler do to score that suite upgrade? (See what I did there?)
Stay one night
If you’re on vacation with your family, this isn’t your best option; but it works. Hotels book up. When they oversell their rooms, they will bump the one or two nighters into a suite in order to free up the regular rooms for those booking a longer stay. You get your upgrade and they get an additional guest. Everyone wins!
Novel concept, I realize. You would be amazed how few just simply ask for one. The clerk just wants you to be nice to them. It isn’t their money, so they don’t have a big reason to say no. If it’s available, they’ll usually just say yes! You get your upgrade and they get a happy customer.
Combine mileage accounts
These days everyone is in the points game. Upgrades get easier when you are elite, as we said at the beginning of this post. You can get there without staying in hotels for months by combining two things with your hotel loyalty account: your airline and your credit card.
United is partnered with Marriott and Chase.
American is partnered with Hilton and Citibank.
Use partners and you’ll have more points than you know what to do with*
*if you run into that problem, message me! I can help 😉
